Workshop FAQ

Subscribe, Download, and Fix Missing Maps.

Quick answers to the most common Meccha Chameleon Workshop questions — from subscribing to your first custom map to troubleshooting why it won't show up.

Subscribe & Install

How do I subscribe to a Workshop map?

Open the Meccha Chameleon Steam Workshop page, click on any map, and hit the green Subscribe button. Steam handles the download automatically. Launch the game, create a server, and the map appears in your lobby's map picker.

Do I need to manually download Workshop map files?

No. Steam handles everything when you click Subscribe. Do not download files from third-party sites or manually place files in game folders. Workshop maps are Ready-To-Use Items.

Are Workshop maps free?

Yes. All Steam Workshop maps for Meccha Chameleon are free to subscribe and play. You only need to own the base game.

Can I play Workshop maps with friends?

Yes. The host subscribes to the map, creates a server, and selects the Workshop map in the lobby. Friends join the server as normal. Make sure everyone is on the same game version.

Troubleshooting

I subscribed but the map doesn't show in my lobby. What do I do?

First, make sure Steam finished downloading the map (check Steam's download manager). Then restart both Steam and the game, relaunch, and create a new server. If it still doesn't appear, make sure your game is updated to the latest version. Version mismatches can hide Workshop content.

Steam says 'you've made too many requests' when I try to browse Workshop maps.

This is Steam's rate-limit firewall being triggered by the game's automatic mod-download behavior. Workaround: use the Quick View button (magnifying glass icon on the Workshop page) to subscribe instead of opening the full map page. You can also clear Steam's browser cache: Steam menu > Settings > In-Game > Delete Web Browser Data.

Friends can't join my custom map server. What's wrong?

The most common cause is version mismatch. Since v1.1.0, Meccha Chameleon requires all players to be on the same game version for multiplayer. Make sure everyone updates their game. Also confirm the host's map finished downloading and that the server is set to a region everyone can reach.

Custom map lighting looks wrong or too dark.

Since v1.1.0, custom Workshop maps have the default skylight disabled. The map creator is responsible for adding their own lighting. If a custom map looks too dark, it's likely the creator didn't set up lighting correctly. This is a known behavior, not a bug on your end.

I join a custom map server and spawn in a black void or outside the map.

This usually means you don't have the map downloaded or your game version doesn't match the host's. Subscribe to the map manually before joining, and make sure your game is updated. This issue is most common when joining a host who is using custom maps you haven't subscribed to.

Do I need to recreate the server after changing mods or maps?

No. Since v1.2.0, you can swap Workshop maps without recreating the server. The mod integration was improved to allow map changes mid-session.

General

What's the difference between Workshop maps and mods?

Meccha Chameleon Workshop only has custom maps — playable hide-and-seek stages. There are no skins, sound packs, balance mods, or other mod types. Every Workshop item is a map you can load into a lobby.

Are Workshop maps the same as mods?

For Meccha Chameleon, Workshop content is specifically custom maps. There are no other mod types (skins, gameplay mods, etc.) on the Workshop. All Workshop items are playable hide-and-seek stages.

Do I need a Workshop downloader?

No, and you should avoid them. Steam's built-in Subscribe system handles everything. Third-party Workshop downloaders are typically used for piracy and can expose you to malware. All legitimate Workshop maps are accessible through Steam for free.

What maps are best for new players?

Start with Minecraft (pixelated textures = easy hiding) or Swimming Pool (small, clean, forgiving). Both are beginner-friendly. Meeting Room is the best all-around map once your group has played a few rounds. See our map guide for more recommendations.

How do I judge if a Workshop map is good?

Look for: clear screenshots showing the actual playable area, recent updates from the creator, reasonable lobby size recommendations, and comments that don't report crashes or broken spawns. Avoid maps that rely on clipping, wall-stuck spots, or one-way geometry.

Creating Maps

Can I make my own custom map?

Yes. Meccha Chameleon has official modding tools and Steam Workshop support. You'll need Unreal Engine 5.6.1, the official mod kit, and SteamCMD for uploading. The process involves creating a content-only plugin, building a World Partition level, packaging through the Legacy Project Launcher, and uploading via SteamCMD.

Where can I find a tutorial for making custom maps?

TheGamer has a complete step-by-step guide covering the full workflow from plugin creation to Steam Workshop upload. Read it at: https://www.thegamer.com/meccha-chameleon-custom-map-guide/. The official mod kit is provided by the developer lemorion_1224.
